BpB Workshop Berlin – Oktober 2018

From October 18-20, 2018, the Centropa/ Trans.History team was invited by the Federal Agency for Civic Education to conduct a workshop on „Hope : Uncertainty – A look at Jewish life after 1918“ during the 2019 History Festival „War or Peace“ in Berlin. Together with Irina Shikhova, educational coordinator from Moldova, Khrystyna Rutar, veteran educator and teaching expert from Ukraine, and Wolfgang Els, Centropa‘s chief filmmaker, we discussed the far-reaching changes for European Jewry after World War I from a comparative perspective and developed a digital storytelling idea with an international group of 16 young professionals from 10 countries. During the three-day program, we also introduced to Centropa‘s Oral History methodology and filmmaking, worked with selected Centropa interviews from five different countries, and integrated the urban space going on a walking tour through Berlin‘s former Jewish quarter, the so-called Scheunenviertel, and on an excursion to the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weissensee visiting the World War I German-Jewish Veterans memorial.
