Mukachevo was a Jewish town. It was even called &#8216;little Jerusalem&#8217; and it was a center of Hasidism. There was a yeshivah, a Jewish higher educational institution, in Mukachevo. The chief rabbi at the yeshivah was the popular Hasidic rabbi Chaim Spira [Shapira].
